36.4-inch monitor has 4,096 x 2,160 resolution

Eizo Nanao has announced the DuraVision FDH3601, an industrial 36.4-inch LED-backlit monitor with a 4096 x 2160 resolution. It will set you back a whopping ¥2,880,000 ($36,000). The good news is that it comes with a 24-year warranty, so you don't have to worry that you'll have wasted tens of thousands of dollars on something that breaks in a few years.

The price tag, along with the fact there is no manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) because you can only buy it from the company's online store, clearly indicates that this monitor is primarily aimed for industrial applications. Eizo Nanao claims the monitor is perfect for monitoring air traffic control and geographic such as survey maps.

Other specifications of the monitor include a brightness of 700cd/cm2, the ability to display about 1,073.74 million colors (10 bits each for red, green, and blue), a contrast ratio of 1,000:1, a viewing angle of 176° both vertically and horizontally, as well as normal and maximum power consumptions of 162W and 350W, respectively. It even comes equipped with a human presence sensor, which allows it to automatically turn itself off when the user is away.

Last month, we wrote about a possible successor to the HDTV. Japanese national TV broadcaster NHK and Sharp jointly developed an 85-inch LCD compatible with Super Hi-Vision, a next-generation television broadcast format. With approximately 33 megapixels, Super Hi-Vision is touted as having 16 times the resolution of 1080p. NHK began R&D into Super Hi-Vision in 1995 and aims to begin trial broadcasts in 2020.

Take-Two planning more Duke Nukem

Gamers waited over a decade to play the official sequel to Duke Nukem. The title was originally announced by 3D Realms in 1997. It was finally released on June 14, 2011 in North America, and on June 10, 2011 in the rest of the world. The reviews that followed were poor – they basically concluded the game sucks.

Duke Nukem Forever will not, however, be the game that killed the franchise. In a recent interview with Forbes, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick hinted that we would be seeing more of Duke. Making another game anytime soon would not be a good idea. Then again, I really can't see Duke on TV, or even in a movie. Okay, I can see him in a movie, but I'm scared it will be abysmal (think Doom).

Does Take-Two own the intellectual property surrounding Duke? Could you spin that out into not just new games, but movies and TV?
We don't really talk about it in detail but you will see future Duke IP coming from this company.

One other aspect came up in the interview: the raunchiness of the game. While many die-hard fans of Duke Nukem insist this is just how the game is meant to be, some believe the fact that it wasn't tasteful only further hurt it. Although Zelnick understands the need to properly label a game as inappropriate for certain audiences, he believes that once you get over that hurdle, you can do whatever the hell you want:

David Ewalt: Are you concerned about criticism over the adult content and humor in your new game Duke Nukem Forever?

Strauss Zelnick: We take ratings guidelines and marketing guidelines as seriously as a heart attack around here. We do not market mature products to children. When friends of mine say, "Oh, I plan to get Red Dead Redemption for my fifteen year old," I say, "You know this product is intended for adults?" We are incredibly serious about it.

That said, when we put something out I stand behind it, and will not compromise. When you put all those things all together it's difficult to be critical of the company. Because here in America, thank God, we have the ability to do what we want.

What is there left to be said? I'm sorry if you don't like it. Don't consume it.

While I can't comment on whether the game was a good mature title (because I have yet to play it), I have to say that its launch trailer (the NSFW one) was very well done. I have never seen a trailer that was so entertaining.

Samsung Attain Galaxy S II for AT&T

On Samsung Mobile USA’s Facebook page, a fan had tagged an image of a large-screened smartphone as the Samsung Attain, a variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II for U.S. carrier AT&T. While the Attain has been rumored for AT&T, and other Galaxy S II variants are speculated to hit most, if not all, major U.S. carriers, this leaked image of the Attain shows visual and stylistic differences from the main Galaxy S II model that has been introduced for the ineternational market.
The user who had posted the image notes that the image is obtained from Samsung Singapore’s photo, and shows a slim and sleek smartphone with AT&T branding on it docked in what appears to either be a multimedia dock or desk dock. Though the Attain retains the sleek and slim form factor, large screen, and Android OS of the international Galaxy S II, the Attain does differ in that it follows the traditional Android button layout. Just beneath the Attain’s screen are four capacitive touch buttons for Android navigation, similar to what is being used on the Samsung Infuse 4G for AT&T.

Though the Attain pictured in the image looks identical to the Infuse 4G, there is a subtle difference that can be noticed where the power button is situated, perhaps suggesting that the model shown in the image is not the Infuse 4G but is actually the Attain. In the image, the power logo is located towards the front–on the screen side of the power button while on the Infuse 4G the logo is towards the rear of the handset on the side of the battery and away from the screen.
It looks like with the Galaxy S II, Samsung is giving the U.S. carriers a chance to differentiate their models with different branding just like the original Galaxy S. For instance, with the Galaxy S, AT&T branded their device the Samsung Captivate while carriers like Sprint named theirs the Epic 4G and Verizon had the Fascinate.
